We put a face on the Warrior Ethos with a new web special on
www.Army.mil. Here you can read about
Soldiers, DA Civilians, and family members who epitomize the Warrior
Ethos. The site includes a "virtual tour" of the Warrior Ethos exhibit
dedicated at the Pentagon on November 10, 2004 by Gen. Peter J.
Schoomaker and SMA Kenneth O. Preston. Watch the video, download
posters, and more.
At Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, Battery F, 7th Field
Artillery Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, rolled out its M198 155mm
howitzers during a show-of-force exercise. For several hours, the
battery's "big guns" let loose with a barrage of bone-jarring blasts
that sent rounds screaming downrange, impacting on the side of a
mountain several miles away. The artillerymen do more, however, than
“exercising the cannon.” The battery played a major role in reducing the
number of rocket attacks on the base over the past few months. One
Soldier said he thinks they should shoot every once and a while "just to
let [the insurgents] know we're still here." The day before the
exercise, the battery delivered humanitarian aid to nearby residents.

Fighting the war against global terrorism while simultaneously
transforming itself to confront 21st-century threats is challenging
the Army, a top military officer told U.S. House members here Feb.
3.
The U.S. Army is in the midst of its greatest transformation since
the period just before America's entry into World War II, Army Vice
Chief of Staff Gen. Richard A. Cody noted in testimony before the
House Armed Services Committee.
"This is the most significant change of your Army since 1939," Cody
told committee members.
The Army is now transforming its Cold War-era, heavy-division
structure into a more mobile, brigade-oriented force equipped with
the Stryker armored vehicle. Cody said the Army plans to establish
43 of these new modular brigades.
In fact, Cody noted, the Army's first modular brigade, from the 3rd
Infantry Division, is starting to deploy to Iraq. The 101st Airborne
and 10th Mountain divisions also are undergoing transformation, he
said.
The Army's recently granted request to temporarily add 30,000
soldiers to the ranks was made, Cody observed, "so we can prime the
pump, restructure the Army while it's moving and get it out of its
Cold War structure."
