 'Fake' cigarettes pose extra danger

Smokers who buy illegal cigarettes are exposing themselves to dangerous levels of toxins such as lead and arsenic, the Government warned yesterday.

John Healey, the customs minister, said the risk to smokers was getting higher because more than half of all cigarettes now sold illegally were fake brands.

Counterfeit cigarettes, manufactured in criminal factories in eastern Europe and the Far East, were much more dangerous than the brand versions they were imitating, Mr Healey said.

They are low quality fake cigarettes that could pose a danger to you, and they do not taste the same as official premium cigarettes.

The minister made his announcement as he published new research showing how many hazardous chemicals there were in the millions of illegal cigarettes seized by Customs and Excise every day. Two years ago only 15 per cent of the illegal cigarettes being sold on streets, in pubs and in markets were counterfeit. But now 54 per cent of them are and in London the figure is as high as 85 per cent.

Mr Healey said that this was partly a tribute to the success of Customs and Excise. International gangs were finding it more difficult to bring in genuine cigarettes and so were making their own fakes.

According to the new research, the counterfeit cigarettes, sold in packets looking almost identical to genuine brands, contain "much higher quantities of known carcinogens" than normal ones.

They have five times as much cadmium, nearly six times as much lead and high levels of arsenic. They also contain 160 per cent more tar, 80 per cent more nicotine and 133 per cent more carbon monoxide.
