Filtered Pall Mall is enhancing its advertising with a new design, font and brand identifier.  According to Bruce Coley, brand director for Pall Mall at Louisville, Ky.-based Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, research shows that the new look conveys an upscale image for the brand, aligning the brand's advertising with the premium tobacco product. "The improved advertising is an evolutionary step for Filtered Pall Mall," he said. "The new brand identifier and advertising complements the high-quality product and premium cigarettes online."

Brown & Williamson, Louisville, KY, heightens smokers’ awareness of filtered Pall Mall cigarettes through a 60-count display box of lighters that mimics a “hard box,” complete with a flip-top lid.

The 63/8’’ x 5’’ x 8’’ box contains three plastic trays that hold 20 each of red, blue, and green lighters. The trays rest upon a microflute corrugated platform that positions them at the top of the box. The lighter box was introduced nationwide last Fall at gas/convenience stores for six varieties of Pall Mall filter cigarettes that had been introduced last year.

“The idea is to build brand awareness and cut through the clutter at retail,” states Bruce Coley, B&W senior brand manager.

The 1998 legal settlement involving four major tobacco companies was a windfall for states. In exchange for agreeing not to sue cigarette manufacturers to recover the public health care costs of treating smoking-related illnesses, states so far have reaped $37.5 billion in payments since 2000, according to the National Governors Association.

Many had expected states to use the money for anti-smoking and health care programs.

"There was not a spending pledge to do this, but there was certainly a big expectation that they were going to use some of this money for tobacco prevention, in our minds," said Peter Fisher, director of state issues for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Fisher's group released the report along with the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society and the American Lung Association.
