The most expensive place in the country to buy cigarettes is New York City, which has a state tax of $1.50 and city tax of $1.50, for a total of $3 in taxes per pack. The next highest state taxes are Rhode Island at $2.46 and New Jersey at $2.40.

Washington State to Hike Cigarette Taxes!
If lawmakers pass a House bill raising the state cigarette tax to $2.50 a pack, Washington would be the second most expensive place in the country to buy cigarettes.

The proposed tax would raise the current $1.425 a pack by more than a dollar. The additional revenue would generate an estimated $300 million in two years for the state's health-care fund, according to bill sponsors. Proponents also say the substantial tax would deter people from smoking, saving nearly $1 billion in future health-care costs.

Rep. Rodney Tom, R-Medina, sponsor of HB 2075, said the savings outweigh the potential blow to cigarette vendors.

"I really see this bill as an expense reduction," he said.

Sen. Pat Thibaudeau, D-Seattle, is sponsoring a similar bill in the Senate that would raise the cigarette tax 60 cents.

"I'm not here to destroy small businesses. But I am here to say it's been clearly demonstrated that smoking ruins your health. And that costs everyone money," she said.

Eric Lindblom, manager for policy research at Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said "raising cigarette prices is one of the quickest, most effective ways to reduce youth smoking."

Every time the state increases cigarette taxes by 10 percent, there is a 6 to 7 percent decrease in youth smokers, he said.

New Hampshire to Hike Cigarette Taxes!
Gov. John Lynch on Tuesday proposed raising the cigarette tax 28 cents per pack to help pay for a state budget with few new programs.

Lynch resolves a projected $370 million shortfall by counting on the economy for higher revenues, raising the cigarette tax, recouping tax mistakes through auditing and increasing lottery ticket and liquor sales.

The increase in the cigarette tax would raise the total tax to 80 cents per pack — producing $87 million over the next two years. Tax rates in surrounding states are: Massachusetts and Connecticut, $1.51; Rhode Island, $2.46; Vermont, $1.19; and Maine $1. Unlike New Hampshire, those states also have sales taxes levied on top of their cigarette taxes.
