CamelBak, a Petaluma company that manufactures backpack
water packs used mostly by cyclers and outdoors enthusiasts, is shifting
gears to boost production of its water packs for the military.
In the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, CamelBak's military and
law enforcement division has been shipping thousands of backpacks to
every branch of the U.S. military.
"If you watch the news closely, you'll notice the black rubber hose
attached to each soldier's shoulder. That's the drinking tube for their
CamelBak pack," said Chuck Hunter, vice president of the military
division.
A soldier can lose more than a liter of water per hour when active,
especially in a hot climate. If water is not replaced, heat stress,
nausea, fatigue and loss of muscle endurance can follow.
CamelBak packs have been part of the Army and Marine Corps uniform for
several years. It designs different versions for military use. They
range in price from $20 to $160 depending on size, style and features.
