 The North Face
In 1966, two hiking enthusiasts founded a small mountaineering retail
store in the heart of San Francisco's
North Beach. The Company soon became
known as The North Face, a retailer of high-performance climbing and
backpacking equipment. (The name was selected because in the Northern
Hemisphere, the north face of a mountain is generally the coldest, iciest
and most formidable to climb.) In 1968, The North Face began designing and
manufacturing its own brand of high-performance mountaineering apparel and
equipment, and in the early 1980s, extreme skiwear was added to the
product offering. By the end of the decade, The North Face became the only
supplier in the United States to offer a comprehensive collection of
high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs and tents.
In Spring 1996, The North
Face made its debut in the sportswear market with the launch of Tekware®,
a collection of high-performance sportswear made from advanced materials
using innovative construction. The Tekware® collection was designed to
provide rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, trail runners and outdoor
enthusiasts with the ultimate in fit and function. Later that year, the
Company acquired A-5 Adventures, Inc., adding portaledges and other big
wall gear to its collection of outdoor equipment. The North Face launched
its own line of trekking and trail running shoes in Spring 1999.
Now, 38 years after its
start in the outdoor industry, The North Face provides an extensive line
of performance apparel, equipment and footwear. Offering the most

The North Face has seen its share of peaks and valleys. A subsidiary
of VF Corporation, the firm designs and distributes high-tech outdoor
apparel and gear, such as jackets, tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks.
Its products, made by suppliers in Asia, the US, Mexico, and South
America, are sold mainly by outdoor and sporting goods retailers in North
America and Europe. Known for gear used in extreme situations -- such as
ice climbing and polar expeditions -- The North Face also offers Tekware
sportswear for a broader market and its namesake footwear. It operates
seven of its own retail stores in the US. After two years of turmoil, the
once-hot company was purchased by VF (Lee jeans, Jansport backpacks) in
2000
The North Face, the US outdoor specialist owned by jeanswear maker VF
Corporation, has teamed up with major local sporting goods companies for
the opening of its first stores in Finland and Russia.
In Finland, The North Face joined forces with Helsinki-based outdoor
company Partioaitta for the opening of a 144 square metre store in the
Finnish capital.
The store, which is located in Yrjoenkatu Street, carries the complete The
North Face clothing, footwear and equipment offering. It is the company's
fourth stand-alone The North Face store in Europe following Amsterdam,
Livigno and London.
The opening of the London store in May last year marked the company's
retail entry in Europe.
The California-based The North Face has chosen St Petersburg for the
opening of its first stand-alone store in Russia.
With the opening of the 140 square metre store the company "strengthens
its position as a leading supplier of high performance products in
Russia", the company revealed.
