Avian Bird Flu Virus
Fear of the bird flu sweeping across Asia has played a major role in driving the government's flurry of preparations for a worldwide epidemic.  That concern prompted President Bush to meet Friday with vaccine makers to try to persuade them to step up production, and it led Health and Human Services secretary Michael Leavitt to depart for a 10-day trip to Asia to discuss planning for a pandemic flu.

But scientists say that although the threat from the avian virus is real, it is probably not immediate.
"I would not say it's imminent or inevitable," said Dr. Jeffery Taubenberger, chief of the molecular pathology department at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. "I think in the future there will be a pandemic."

The Bush administration is in the final stages of preparing a plan to deal with pandemic flu. A draft shows the country is woefully unprepared.  What worries scientists about the current strain of bird flu, known as H5N1, is that it has shown ominous traits. Though it does not often infect humans, it can, and when it does, it seems to be uncommonly lethal. It has killed 60 of the 116 people known to have been infected.

Tamiflu - Fight the Bird Flu
This medication is used to treat illness (symptoms) caused by the flu virus (influenza). Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is also used to prevent the flu (e.g., in household members exposed to a flu sufferer).  The CDC has determined this is the best medication available to combat the Avian Bird Flu.

Anxiety over pandemic outweighed by need to fight standard flu virus.  Fearing a bird flu outbreak, some citizens have called their doctors and pharmacists, trying to stockpile the antiviral drug Tamiflu.

"You just can't be giving people Tamiflu in case bird flu shows up," said Dr. Henry Smith, an American pediatrician. "People are going to be getting (regular) flu this fall, and we need Tamiflu for them."

UN Warns of Bird Flu Risk in Africa
Nobody can tell where bird flu will appear next. But experts from the United Nations say it could be Africa. Delegates heard warnings last week at an international conference in Beijing.

The U.N. coordinator for avian influenza, David Nabarro, says Africa is a strong possibility this spring because of the pathways of wild birds. Still, Mister Nabarro says every country in the world should get prepared.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization had its own warnings for the coming months. It says wild birds coming from Africa could spread the virus in the Black Sea, Caucasus and Near East areas. It says trade and the movement of people could also spread the flu.

The World Health Organization says at least eighty people have died of the h-five-n-one virus since December of two thousand three. This month, Turkey became the first country outside East Asia to report cases in people.

The conference in Beijing took place to raise money to fight bird flu. The United States and others offered almost two thousand million dollars. U.N. officials said they had expected less.

Experts say the virus could kill millions if it changes into a form that spreads easily from person to person.

People are warned about the risk from sick or dead birds or infected waste. But the W.H.O. says heat kills the virus in poultry meat if all parts are cooked to at least seventy degrees Celsius.
