Extreme Sports - Rock Climbing Gear Skaha is a true jewel in the crown of British Columbian rock climbing. The Skaha Bluffs have over 700 routes, ranging from one to three pitches long, accommodating every level of climber, with routes from 5.5 to 5.12. The edgy, featured nature of the rock has resulted in vertical walls with the potential for routes almost anywhere. The Skaha Bluffs are located on a series of cliffs on the east side of the Okanagan Valley, just outside of Penticton. Although the climbs are on crown land, there is no public access or parking, which has led to some issues over the past few years. Currently, one of the local farms has provided a (pay) parking lot, and access. The only access to the Bluffs is from the Braeside Parking lot at the end of Valleyview Road. Sport climbing predominates, although there are a numerous fine trad routes as well. The Skaha Bluffs are a series of north-south canyons with cliffs up to 80 metres tall on either side, which allows you to chase the shade to avoid the summer heat of the Okanagan. Rock climbing in Skaha is best from late March to late October. SKAHA is a great place to stop and warm up if you are traveling to Squamish (coming from the Rockies), and if you like to climb near civilization, it is only a 10 minute drive from Penticton, B.C. As a climbing destination, or as a stop-over on the way to your destination, check out some of the best cragging in Canada, and you will definately come back for more!
