There are many sources listed below. Many of them
will also let you book and buy tickets. Until mid-1996 there were paid
services were considerably better than the free ones, but now we find that
the free services are just as good.
An E-ticket (or
"electronic ticket") is a paper-less ticket. Instead of receiving a
physical ticket, a confirmation number is sent to be used at the airport
check-in with your photo ID (such as a driver's license) to receive your
boarding pass. In some cases, the airlines may ask you to present the
credit card that you used to book your flight.
Using an E-ticket is very simple and completely secure. Most airlines
offer E-tickets, especially for U.S. domestic travel. Overseas with
customs and immigration limits the use of E-tickets internationally. Many
international airlines are starting to offer E-ticketing on select routes.
E-tickets have many benefits. You CAN'T LOSE an E-ticket since your ticket
is your confirmation number and photo identification. And in the event
that you forget the confirmation number, the flight number will do the
job.
TIP: Some carriers require travelers to present the credit card they used
to purchase the ticket online. If you are thinking about purchasing a
ticket for a friend or relative who does not have access to your credit
card, please call and check with the airline about their specific
requirements.

This summer, 200 million passengers are expected to fly — up 4 percent
from last year — according to the Department of Transportation. Already
this year, one in every four flights is delayed with wait times
averaging 52 minutes.
The biggest problems, according to the DOT, are expected at Atlanta;
Philadelphia; New York's LaGuardia; Newark, N.J.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.;
and Washington's Dulles Airport.
Low-cost air carriers are one key reason for the delays. The companies,
which add flights and lower fares, are encouraging more people to fly.
For example, when Southwest Airlines started servicing Philadelphia and
began flying to Providence, R.I., the one-way fare dropped from $328 to
$54. The number of passengers skyrocketed in three months from 10,000 to
more than 100,000, according to the DOT.
At Dulles Airport, Independence Air began operating as a low-cost
carrier a year ago.
"We're looking forward to excellent passenger traffic," said Rick DeLisi,
Independence Air's director of corporate communications. "Lots of people
are looking to fly the new low-fare airlines."
